The Pursuit of the Ideal Watch

As a watch enthusiast who has owned hundreds of timepieces, from vintage classics to modern contemporaries, I reached a point where no attainable watch fully captured my vision. Many were too thick, too large, or too small; others were heavy, uncomfortable, overly complicated, or monotonous in design. Common dials, conventional crowns, thick bezels, scratch-prone glass, ill-fitting bracelets or straps, and non wrist-hugging case profile often undermined their appeal. Some watches with thoughtful craftsmanship and original design exist at very high price points, defining exclusivity by price when it should be determined by design, craftsmanship and rarity while remaining attainable.

I envisioned a watch that would be sleek, elegant, timeless and aesthetically captivating—attention-grabbing without being loud. It needed to be robust yet lightweight and thin, with refined proportions that wear comfortably in both formal and casual settings, pairs easily with straps and bracelets, and match well with a range of attires. It must possess an alluring dial and hands that invite attention through subtle complexity and thoughtful design. It must also combine craftsmanship, reliability, and versatility while remaining attainable. Above all, it should be desirable, distinctive, and immediately recognizable — an iconic expression of a coherent design language.

With this ambition, the journey began — a process spanning years of research, countless iterations, meticulous development, and dedicated production efforts. The process was demanding yet profoundly rewarding.

Design Philosophy

The goal was to build a distinctive mechanical timepiece with collector appeal. It is crafted not simply to tell time but to express design, craftsmanship, and individuality, and more importantly to be worn, enjoyed and treasured. The watch had to be sleek, elegant, and visually harmonious, with balanced symmetry and proportions that transcend fleeting trends. It needed to embody a timeless character while sparking a sense of discovery, subtle playfulness, and quiet excitement. It must be slim and ergonomic, comfortable and versatile, durable and precise. Premium in quality yet attainable by aspiring watch enthusiasts, it must be joyful to wear while transitioning effortlessly between formal and casual settings, and complementing a wide range of attire. It can pair seamlessly with various straps and bracelets, allowing the wearer to personalize and refresh its character with ease. Every element of the watch must be thoughtfully considered to contribute to a coherent whole. Every detail was engineered to deliver exceptional value hence maintaining attainability. The aim was to create a simple yet coherent design with interconnected geometry, harmonious proportions, timeless appeal, compact construction, exceptional versatility and attractive value. It must be equally suited to formal and casual occasions and a range of attire, rendering it a desirable watch to enjoy.

Nevan Nylir Entangle Geometry

The Entangle Geometry, inspired by the Nevan Nylir logo, is a distinctive case architecture defined by four quarter-circle corners geometrically entangled to a round case that subtly transform into natural avocado-(pendeloque-)shaped ergonomic lugs, and at the caseback provide additional anchoring points for screws to enable a slim bezel and expansive dial aperture. The case assembly interconnects with the Nevan Nylir crown, dial elements (circumferential markers and Entangle font name), pendeloque hands, EZYLink bracelets or Hallmark pendeloque straps with Nevan Nylir buckle. The Entangle Geometry forms the foundation of the brand’s aesthetic philosophy — an approach that emphasizes connectivity, proportion, clarity, and timeless design-where separate elements interlock and flow together to form a unified structure. It creates a coherent visual identity where each detail contributes meaningfully to the whole.

Challenges and Achievements

• • Distinctive Case Architecture
    The case must be simple and distinctive. After exploring multiple options, the shape of the Nevan Nylir logo was adopted. The defining architectural characteristic lies in its four quarter-circle corners which are geometrically entangled to the round case. They transform subtly and seamlessly into short, slender, curvy pendeloque lugs to enhance wrist fit and ergonomics. They also provide additional anchoring points for screws that secure the sapphire display caseback to the mid-case which enable a slim bezel and expansive dial opening to give the watch a larger visual presence. Coined the Nevan Nylir Entangle Geometry, this signature silhouette design achieves distinctive aesthetic balance, structural integrity and ergonomic comfort, yielding an architectural finesse and visual identity unique to Nevan Nylir.

  • Ultra-Thin-Light Construction
    The compact and lightweight case required meticulous optimization of vertical spacing. The pursuit of thinness demanded that every component be refined to minimize thickness, pushing design tolerances to their limits. The result is an impressively slim profile of just 8.95 mm weighing about 40 g, housing the Miyota 9015 movement, dial, hands and the double-domed sapphire crystal.

  • Nevan Nylir Crown Integration
    The screw-down crown was sculpted to mirror the case geometry and positioned symmetrically at mid-case height, preserving visual symmetry and reinforcing the cohesive design language.

  • Refined Finishing
    To accentuate the watch’s sculptural form, alternating finishes were applied to the different surfaces across the case assembly. Satin-brushed mid-case, bezel and lugs are framed by mirror-polished accents on the bezel edges, caseback, lugs and crown to create a dynamic interplay of light from different angles that enhances the elegance of the overall design.

  • Dial Innovation
    To create a captivating, alluring and novel dial, intricate applied circumferential hour markers with anchoring circles were boldly designed beyond conventional layouts in two distinct lengths across two radial tracks. These are filled with BGW9 Super-LumiNova for visibility and legibility in low light. A skeletonized metal logo, hollow Entangle-font name, and a framed date window further distinguish the dial, giving it depth and individuality.

  • Natural Stone Dials
    Exquisite natural stones — Celestial Tiger Eye and Imperial Mauve Jade — were selected for their beauty and unique character. However, producing a large 35 mm dial from natural stone at such minimal thickness posed extraordinary challenges. The dials were highly prone to cracking during cutting, grinding, polishing, drilling, and assembly—especially with applied hour markers and a date window aperture. The rejection rate reached as high as 80%, resulting in low yields and significant development costs. Achieving consistent quality demanded exceptional craftsmanship, persistence and precision, making the final successful pieces both rare and remarkable.

Celestial Blue Tiger Eye Stone – Depth in Motion

The deep Blue Tiger Eye stone embodies time set in space — shaped by nature, eternal in character, and born from the depths of the earth. Its rich oceanic blues and mesmerizing chatoyancy (cat’s-eye effect) evoke movement within stillness, as light glides across the surface to create a constantly shifting visual experience.

No two stone dials are ever identical. Natural variations in banding, tone, and depth ensure that each piece possesses its own visual identity and subtle color expression, making every watch inherently unique.

Beyond its natural beauty, Blue Tiger Eye has long been associated with clarity, focus, and quiet confidence. Traditionally regarded as a stone of protection and insight, it symbolizes calm strength and thoughtful precision — qualities that resonate deeply with the spirit of fine mechanical watchmaking.

On the wrist, the Blue Tiger Eye dial offers more than color alone. It delivers depth, movement, and character, transitioning effortlessly between understated sophistication in formal settings and bold distinction in casual wear.

Imperial Purple Mauve Jade Stone – Poise and Distinction

The Purple Mauve Jade is rare and elegant prized for its soft violet-to-rose hues and smooth, refined texture. Its gentle coloration and natural translucency give it a calm, sophisticated presence.

Each piece displays unique natural clouding, tonal variations, and mineral patterns. Its delicate lavender hues shift subtly under light, revealing soft layers of depth and character. Refined yet expressive, it offers a distinctive alternative to conventional dial colors. Naturally formed and individually unique, each dial carries its own pattern and tonal nuances. ensuring no two watches are ever identical. The smooth polish and gentle translucency create an elegant glow, adding warmth and understated luxury to the wrist.

Traditionally associated with harmony and grace, Purple Mauve Jade embodies calm confidence and emotional balance. It is believed to encourage inner peace and wisdom and offers protection and prosperity.

    Complementing the dial are distinctive pendeloque-shaped (avocado-shaped) hour, minute, and second hands filled with BGW9 Super-LumiNova. These natural pendeloque hands echo the shape of the lugs and simultaneously integrate with the design feature of the circumferential hour markers, creating an interconnection to the dial for clarity and cohesion while reinforcing the watch’s distinctive identity.

  • In collaboration with our partner, extensive joint development was undertaken to create custom 316L stainless steel tool-less adjustable EZYLink bracelets. Featuring hand-removable links with alternating brushed and polished finishing, the tapered bracelets conform perfectly with the short curvy lugs and offer effortless size adjustment for convenience and comfort, enhancing the overall visual appeal and wrist enjoyment.

  • Hallmark Straps
    Through multiple design iterations, luxurious Hallmark stingray straps were developed with curved lug profiles to integrate seamlessly with the short curvy pendeloque lugs of the watch and quick-release pins for easy interchangeability. Carefully matched to the dial colors, the pendeloque-shaped straps mirroring the shape of the lugs and hands are sized optimally to enhance visual continuity, wrist fit, comfort and tactile experience.

  • A Nevan Nylir-shaped 316L stainless steel pin buckle was made to adorn and secure the Hallmark straps. This specially made buckle complements and completes the overall design and function of the watch.

  • Space-Time Capsule Presentation Box
  • After intensive design and prototyping, a bespoke 3D-printed Nevan Nylir-shaped “Space-Time Capsule” presentation box was created as part of the ownership experience. The capsule houses the watch along with 4 additional straps or bracelets, transforming the box into a functional and collectable display.

  • Preserving Exclusivity
  • To preserve exclusivity and collectability, each dial variant is limited to only 28 pieces. Every watch becomes part of a very small production run, underscoring rarity and collectability.

  • A central challenge was delivering all of these features without the excessive price typically associated with them hence maintaining attainability. Achieving refined design, craftsmanship, premium materials, and thoughtful versatility without compromising affordability and accessibility required constant evaluation, disciplined engineering and careful sourcing. The result is a timepiece that feels special, rare, and meaningful, yet remains within reach.
